1. What is our student/teacher ratio? Student/teacher ratio is 1 teacher to 8 children.
2. Do you get the children ready for Kindergarten? Yes. We teach all the necessary Kindergarten readiness skills but we do it through play and fun.
3. Do you have a 3 year old class and a 4 year old Pre-k class? No. We have mixed age grouping in both rooms. Mixed age grouping creates confidence in the older children as they help teach younger children. The younger children learn from the older ones. During the day we pull children aside and work with them at their own level.
4. Do you accept non-Beach and Tennis club members? Yes. We have a three-tiered price system – one for Beach and Tennis Club, one for Sun and Sail Club and one for non-members.
5. Does the school allow parent volunteers? We welcome parent volunteers during special events only.
6. Does the school provide lunch and snack? No. Parents provide a nutritious snack and lunch. We stress healthy eating and have a no sugar policy.
7. Do the children have to nap? Yes. State Licensing states, “All children shall be given an opportunity to nap or rest without distraction or disturbance from other activities at the center.” The children do not have to sleep, but they do need to rest quietly on their nap mats.
8. How often do the children play outside? Children play outside for about 45 minutes each morning and afternoon, weather permitting. We will stay inside on extremely hot days, days with bad air quality, or rainy days. We will then offer an indoor exercise activity.
9. Does the school have an outside play structure? No. We offer a variety of outdoor activities so that the children really do not miss one.
10. Do you offer an alternative to the Tuesday/Thursday or Monday/Wednesday/Friday options? Yes. Space permitting, you may choose the two or three days that work best for you providing they remain constant.
11. Can I increase/decrease my days and times during the year? Yes. Space available, we can increase the days. We are fairly flexible and will work with you to provide a schedule convenient to both you and the school.
12. Does the school offer parent conferences? We provide parent conferences if requested. We make every effort to inform you of your child’s progress throughout the year, sometimes even daily. Our staff is always available for questions.
13. What kind of art activities do you provide? We offer open-ended, age appropriate, process art activities that encourage creativity. We always encourage the children to participate, but do not force them to.
14. If I go on vacation, can I deduct that time from my tuition? Full-time, year-round children may take a one week deduction of tuition once during the school year. This can be at our holiday break in December, the week we are closed for cleaning in August, or during your family vacation.
15. Do I pay full tuition every month, even when there is a holiday? Yes. Fees for the year are based on a non-profit budget and are averaged over the school session and include holidays and short months.
16. Are there any deductions for sick days? No. There will be no make-up days for illness or vacation and tuition and fees remain constant regardless of the student’s attendance or holidays.
17. Do the children ever play near the pools or water? No. Rest assured we have safety standards in place to prevent children from going near the pools or water.
18. The school is going to be renovated soon. Is it safe now? Yes. The renovation will include a new roof, earthquake retrofit, and an addition to the gym.
19. When will the retrofit take place and where will the preschool be relocated during the process? The retrofit will take place sometime during the spring of 2010. It will take between 6 weeks and 3 months, barring any unforeseen circumstances. We are not sure where the preschool will be relocated, but hopefully it will be on the club grounds.
20. I understand that there are committees in place to support the preschool. How can I get involved? Just ask the staff or go to the preschool website www.lakeviewlearningcenter.org
21. What does N.A.E.Y.C. Accreditation mean? Early childhood programs accredited by the NAEYC Academy for Early Childhood Program Accreditation have voluntarily undergone a comprehensive process of internal self-study, invited external Professional review to verify compliance with the Criteria for High Quality Early Childhood Programs, and have been found to be in substantial compliance with Criteria. The Criteria can be found on NAEYC’s Web site at www.naeyc.org/accreditation.
